Music: The other flavor of Cuba
First of all I apologize for leaving thrown for a while this space to say what my head thinks, and as New Year's resolution, here I am returning to it so as not to neglect it. Take well to wish (albeit late) new year full of new experiences and emotions, and I hope that in the year-end holidays have enjoyed, and mostly eaten.
to what we have. From childhood I have really enjoyed the Cuban rhythms and all its variations, from Afro-Cuban rumba, salsa, mambo, cha cha, Guaguanco and other delights the ear that has given us the mythical Caribbean island. It all started back in 1997 when my dad (someone who has always loved music) bought a CD which is entitled "Introducing ... Ruben Gonzalez."
Any bug 10 years (my age at the time) would have seemed boring music to old and unbearable, but for me it was very interesting. Just listening to the fine and delicate piano sounds, I could imagine that old man who showed me the CD cover art casting in a room of a Cuban neighborhood, accompanied by another good trail of old men who supplemented their orchestra. Shortly thereafter, the same CD became the soundtrack of strictly for visiting my grandparents. By the way, my grandfather was always a lover of good music, but also played several instruments including piano, guitar, concertina (a type of large accordion) and he called the "flute", his harmonica. For in those visits, I set as my grandfather enjoyed those tropical notes of old, and wore his usual tap dance beat of each song (same habit I inherited it probably listening to music).
Well now is not the classic Cuban music on which I write, but a great project that discovered there in 2006, which has since caused my taste for Cuban music will increase dramatically. This is Rhythms of the World.
began as a musical experiment between some U.S. producers and Cuban musicians, the best ensemble style of the famous exponent of the purest Cuban rhythms, Buena Vista Social Club, an experiment that actually has two of the original voices the famous orchestra: Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer. It mixes contemporary popular songs that in some way or another are present in the minds of people, which have been brilliantly adapted a musical with a blast of tropical vibe and an exquisite Cuban son that surprises and delights. It features songs singers and bands like Coldplay, Maroon 5, Jack Johnson, Artic Monkeys, U2, among others, and superb arrangements of classics like "As Time Goes By" by Ibrahim Ferrer and "Killing me softly" with Omara Portuondo .
turns out that the experiment was so successful that the second edition was inevitable, although I did wait a few years. In 2009 "Rhythms of the World Classics" was released ready to captivate the musical tastes of millions, and I fell round.
The mechanics of this album was different. It was a selection of covers of classic songs of all time, such as "Hotel California", "Imagine", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit", among others, performed by contemporary singers and bands like The Killers, Jack Johnson, Amy Winehouse, Fall Out Boy. Imagine so many different styles, so many so awesome classic Cuban rhythms and think it is almost impossible, but once again created an album that, in my case, I can hear over and over again without getting bored or a single note. And something that makes this album something much more special is that this "mess" has good cause to exist, because the money raised from its sale went to the foundation "Artists Project Earth uniting efforts against climate change and supports countries that have suffered natural disasters recently.
already enshrined as a symbol of innovation and good music, Rhythms of the World launches in mid-2010 their newest album entitled "Revival", where again a large selection of songs from musical significance of past and contemporary experience that exquisite transformation and become beautiful mulatto who move their hips to the rhythm of the son.
Highlights on the album: an unusual version of "Stayin 'Alive" by Wyclef Jean, a translation' to English ' of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Bebe, Cuban and an unusual mix of "Feel Good Inc." from the virtual band Gorillaz. Always support the Foundation's "Artists Project Earth", who in 2010 focused its efforts in Haiti and Chile.
would be like eating bread versus those who do not have teeth if I speak of these works of musical art without leaving the links for the fall.
